But even with that small complaint, Wanderstop remains one of the most beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant games I’ve ever played.

Whether through resignation, boredom, or perhaps an inkling of acceptance, Elevada does eventually start to lean into the tea-brewing life. There's plenty to do in these long stretches of the game, each separated into seasons which bring new plants, customers, and activities. You can stay in one season as long as you'd like, but eventually your guests fall silent and have no further requests.

You can decorate as much as you like – fill the entire map with plants, cover the walls in photos – but Wanderstop doesn't outright ask you to do much at all. That's what makes it such a treat. Offered alongside a beautifully told story and a collection of defined challenges is unrestricted access to a virtual garden of your own design.

You realize—this isn’t a cozy retreat. It’s a forced retreat. The game doesn’t ease you into relaxation. It shoves you into it, trapping you inside a world that Alta herself struggles to accept. And that’s when it really sinks in. This is not a game about running away Wanderstop Gameplay to start over. This is a game about being made to stop.

When going to therapy (or indeed starting any hobby or self-improvement pursuit) you'll often be told "you get out of this what you put in". The same is true of Wanderstop. The game offers a varied and largely self-guided experience, but it asks you to engage in its journey with an open heart.

I loved the characters in this game in ways I didn’t anticipate, from the adorkable pretend-knight Gerald and his overbearing love for his son, to the boisterous Nana, whose fiercely competitive nature lands her shop on Wanderstop’s doorstep to try and “run you out of business.

As you tidy the leaves and weeds, you do have a small chance of finding something hidden underneath the clutter. Dozens of little trinkets can be uncovered while you clean, including colorful new tea mugs, teddy bears, and even lost packages. The catch, however, is that you can’t keep these trinkets as the roughly 15-hour campaign progresses, and the story directly addresses why in a clever way.

Next, you climb back up, kick a lever, and the water drains into the next pot. Swing that ladder around, and it’s time to throw your tea and other ingredients in. Then all that’s left is to kick the lever to release it and pour it into a mug. The movement is so fun that you start to feel like a pro by the end, even though the tea making itself is otherwise quite simple.

These customers arrive with their own stories, their own struggles, their own quiet pains they aren’t necessarily looking to solve, just… sit with for a little while.

To make the tea, Elevada has to first harvest leaves from the bushes. Once her basket is full, she'll need to wait for the leaves to dry. There's pelo fast-forward option, just a very slow countdown timer that sets the pace for the rest of the gameplay. Dotted around the clearing are plants that bear coloured seeds which can be harvested or crossbred into hybrids which then bear fruit.

I went into Aloft expecting a Stardew Valley meets Studio Ghibli experience, but I left impressed by its whimsical take on the survival genre instead
